| Are You Ready? By: Sue Cline Date: Dec 6, 2007 - 07:33 PM One of the most common questions I get asked about Active Gray Matter and the business incubation process is what type of assessments we use to screen participants. My response to this question is always that we focus on business assistance, not personal assessments. The reason for this is despite a lot of good attempts, no assessment tool can accurately and consistently predict whether or not someone will be successful at self-employment. Formal tests and assessments can measure aptitude, provide insight into skills, showcase characteristics and highlight what types of experience an applicant brings to the process, but as important as that information is to know in creating a strategy for self-employment, it doesn't accurately predict whether or not that person will be successful. Written tools and tests tell you a lot about the person's past. Illness or disability often change past patterns, and pricy assessments can't measure the impact of a diagnosis. Better, I think, to take the time to listen to what your goals are, understand what your dreams and talents are, calculate financial assets from social security or family investment and then figure out what options I can recommend. Then, the process is truly personalized towards achieving desirable outcomes instead of measuring how well you test. Comments: 0 FAQ |
| 35 Percent of U.S. Entrepreneurs Dyslexic By: Sue Cline Date: Dec 4, 2007 - 11:16 AM That learning disability you're struggling with may actually be to your benefit according to Julie Logan, a professor of entrepreneurship at London’s Cass Business School. She also found that key traits that dyslexics are more likely to possess than their non-dyslexic counterparts -
This doesn't surprise me - I would estimate that roughly thirty percent of the entrepreneurs I've worked with are dyslexic. It is great to see that their ability to be successful backed up by research - too many people still question whether or not people with disabilities should be encouraged to start/run their own business. | Employment Gap at 42% By: Sue Cline Date: Nov 9, 2007 - 09:41 PM Via JFActivist I see that the latest employment statistics are out; it appears that employment for people with disabilities is 42% lower than that of the able-bodied population. Despite efforts by the department of labor and other agencies, people with disabilities are falling behind in employment opportunities. Providing valid, legitimate self-employment options is Active Gray Matter's primary mission, but creating opportunities for career and professional networking is a close second. Comments: 0 FAQ |
| Buy Handmade By: Sue Cline Date: Nov 6, 2007 - 07:46 PM I heard about the Buy Homemade campaign via Fred Wilson right after meeting Susan Hardt from As if! Bags this weekend at the Craftsman Classic. I really liked the explanation of why I should buy handmade goods: Buying handmade is better for people, better for the environment, and better for giving truly special and well-crafted gifts. The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left us all dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. The connection between producer and consumer has been lost. Buying handmade helps them reconnect.Telling your story is an important step - here is how As if does it: as if bags began in 2005 when longtime friends Pam Matthews and Susan Hardt, along with Susan’s sister Ann Benefield, fell in love with a simple tote bag Pam made after taking a class at a local quilt shop. Everyone wanted one! So after some quick sewing lessons and many fabric-buying excursions, all three were busy designing and making bags in different shapes and sizes. Ann had the idea of starting a small business selling the bags at craft fairs and local markets. The only thing we needed for our plan was a good name.Reallocating consumer dollars has a significant impact for independent business owners, artists and tradespeople. | Why Incubation? By: Sue Cline Date: Nov 2, 2007 - 08:31 PM I've spent the past two years speaking to groups and organizations about Active Gray Matter's mission. One of the most frequently asked questions I get about is why I believe incubation is a solution for people who are interested self-employment. The National Business Incubation Association defines business incubation as “…a business support process that accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledgling companies by providing entrepreneurs with an array of targeted resources and services.”It’s goal is to produce successful companies that are innovative and have the potential to create jobs, revitalize communities, strengthen, contribute and compete in the new global economy. Participation in a business incubator has further reduced the risk of small business failures. Historically, NBIA member incubators report that 87% of their incubator graduates are still in business five years later. Self employment and small businesses are a defining characteristic of America’s economic landscape, and present a tremendous opportunity for those most challenged by the competitive labor market. Incubators nurture the development of entrepreneurial people, helping them during the start-up period when they are most vulnerable. Entrepreneurship offers significant opportunity for many people with disabling or chronic conditions. When paired with an incubation process, it is our belief that it reduces risks.
